Hi
I’m Riekert , a South African artist specializing in hand-drawn pet portraits and wildlife art.
I’ve always had an appreciation for animals and nature, particularly dogs and birds. Spending time observing them has naturally shaped the kind of work I enjoy creating.
Through drawing, I focus on studying the small details that make each animal unique, their expression, posture, and the subtle features that give them their character.
Behind the portraits
For many people, pets are part of the family, and I’m always aware that these portraits often hold a lot of personal meaning. Because of that, every portrait I draw is approached with care, patience, and respect for the animal being represented.
Each portrait is created completely by hand. I work primarily with soft pastels, building up layers gradually to create depth, colour variation, and texture. Throughout the process I pay particular attention to the eyes, as they play such an important role in capturing a pet’s personality. I also study fur direction and subtle colour changes to help the portrait feel natural and lifelike.
